How long have you been involved in farm marketing and/or agri-tourism?
15 years.
What crops, attractions, services, or other offerings do you sell to consumers visiting your location?
We sell farm fresh asparagus, lettuce, strawberries, tomatoes, sweet corn, pumpkins and squash. We sell directly to consumers visiting and also through wholesale markets.
What is the most satisfying thing about being in the farm marketing and agri-tourism business?
Producing the highest quality of fruits and vegetables possible for my customers. It is always nice to hear things like "it's the best I ever had" or "we know whatever you grow will always be good".
Why do you think others should get involved with the new Michigan Farm Marketing & Agri-Tourism Association?
I think we should do everything we can as farmers and consumers to support American growers and ensure a fresh and safe food supply. I believe by making people aware of the problems we have as farmers competing in a global market they will give us there full support. Also the more people we have involved in this organization the more influence we may have government policies that impact how our future.
Any other things you would want people to know about you, your operation or your involvement in this organization?
I have liked to watch things grow since I was a baby, I think. I loved to work with my grandfather and had a great admiration for him. I really hope I can pass my way of life down to another generation but I am afraid that we will not be able to compete with other countries especially on labor costs. My fear is that the farms we have always had will become a thing of the past.
