How long have you been involved in farm marketing and/or agri-tourism?
Farm marketing became a large part of my life in my early teens. My job was to greet customers, sign them up to go to the orchard, weigh the harvest and accept their payment. When home from college in the summers, I served as market manager. More recently I have helped out in promotions and communications.
What crops, attractions, services, or other offerings do you sell to consumers visiting your location?
Our main focus is to be a U-pick tree-fruit operation. We also offer fruit already picked, but really encourage our customers to enjoy the U-pick experience. We grow sweet and tart cherries, apricots, peaches, nectarines, pears, plums and apples. We also have some raspberries (black and red), blackberries, hazel nuts, quince, pluots, apriums, pumpkins and even some paw paws. Some special features of Tree-Mendus Fruit Farm are: over 250 varieties of apples from heritage/antique varieties to very new ones; the International Cherry Pit Spitting Championship and the Rent-a-Family Tree program (apple trees). We also host a large number of motor coach tours, some school tours, weddings, company picnics, etc. for large groups by reservation.
What is the most satisfying thing about being in the farm marketing and agri-tourism business?
Sharing our blessings with others. From the beauty and bounty of the land to the awesome flavor and nutrition of fresh, homegrown food, there is so much to share. To bring smiles to faces and provide wholesome family activities is, well, "Tree-Mendus!"
Why do you think others should get involved with the new Michigan Farm Marketing & Agri-Tourism Association?
By networking we can better protect the offerings we have for a unaware world. If we can be unified, I believe we will have a more cooperative audience among legislatures, travel associations, township boards, and others.
Any other things you would want people to know about you, your operation or your involvement in this organization?
I represent Tree-Mendus Fruit Farm on behalf of my brother and sister-in-law who have recently taken over financial responsibilities from my parents, Herb and Liz Teichman.
