How long have you been involved in farm marketing and/or agri-tourism?

My wife Jan and I joined her parents on the farm in 1978. At that time we became more retail orientated with the opening of a donut kitchen and expanded retail market. With the death of Jan's dad in 1986, we assumed primary responsibility for decision-making although Jan's mom has been active in the market, especially the kitchen.

What crops, attractions, services, or other offerings do you sell to consumers visiting your location?

We are mainly a tree fruit operation with apples being the main fruit. We also have tart cherries, peaches, pears, and plums as well as pumpkins and squash. Apples, tart cherries and pumpkins are sold pick your own as well as already picked. We make unpasteurized cider and have a donut kitchen. School tours are available from mid-September through October. We take pride being a working farm. Additionally we attend the Ann Arbor Farmers' Market throughout the year.

What is the most satisfying thing about being in the farm marketing and agri-tourism business?

For me the most satisfying aspect of farm marketing is the many people that I meet. The potential is there that everyone can use our product so our customer base is unlimited. Most of our customers seem genuinely appreciative of us.

Why do you think others should get involved with the new Michigan Farm Marketing & Agri-Tourism Association?

I believe that as a group, farm marketers and agri-tourism destinations are unique in not fitting traditional agriculture or traditional commercial definitions. This has created governmental issues which must be addressed. While each operation may not have serious problems now, the potential is there. This group will work to resolve these issues before many of us have them. But the greatest chance of success is in having greater numbers. As we evolve, we will find many ways to help our industry.

Any other things you would want people to know about you, your operation or your involvement in this organization?

Those of us who have been a part of bring this organization to this point have many different definitions of farm marketing and agri-tourism. However, we each saw value in banding together and had faith that others would see a potential there as well.
